Shipping Crate Design for Artwork and Mirrors

You've sold a piece, and the carrier wants crate dimensions before the install date is even confirmed. The instinct is to build a strong box, add foam, screw on a lid, and hope for the best. That fails when the crate ignores the route, handling chain, climate exposure, and the object's own geometry.


A museum-quality crate is a system decision — it has to protect the object and fit through doors, onto equipment, and through every handoff between pickup and installation.


Plan Before You Cut Wood

Start with the object in its finished transport state, not its catalog description. A canvas on stretchers, a framed piece with glazing, a plate-glass mirror, and a sculpture with an awkward center of gravity all need different support. Record the object type, hardware, removable elements, and any surfaces that can never carry load.


Then map the route: ground, air, or ocean freight each bring different dimensional limits and handling patterns. A five-step planning sequence:

  1. Identify the object — fragile surfaces, load-bearing areas, center of gravity, required orientation.

  2. List every handling point — pickup, loading, transfer, storage, delivery, unpacking, return.

  3. Choose the crate's lifespan — one-way exhibition crate vs. a reusable case for repeated tours.

  4. Map environmental exposure — shock, vibration, tilt, humidity, temperature swings.

  5. Confirm access geometry — truck doors, liftgates, docks, elevators, stair turns, install site.


The destination should shape the crate before material gets ordered. If it can't be loaded, turned, inspected, or opened safely, it isn't protective packaging.


Measure the Piece as It Will Travel

Record the longest dimension first, then height, width, and depth — including frame, glazing, backing, and any attached hardware. Weigh the fully packed assembly. For sculpture, mark the center of gravity and every projection that could contact a support.

Clearance isn't empty space — it's where cushioning deflects and where a handler can remove the object without prying against the frame. Starting points:

A crating shop should adjust these after reviewing the actual object and route.


Choosing Materials

Match material to mass, fragility, route, and reuse plan — over-building adds handling risk and eats freight space for no benefit.

  • Baltic birch plywood (9–12mm): clean edges, strong screw-holding — good for framed art, mirrors, reusable cases.

  • Fir plywood: fine for larger structural members if you check grade, voids, and moisture condition.

  • Double/triple-wall corrugated: 40–75% lighter than wood; works for lighter objects and controlled domestic moves.

  • Reusable HDPE/plastic cases: best when the same object travels repeatedly and a return loop is planned — otherwise wood is usually more practical.


Use screws (not staples) for reopenable crates, threaded inserts for repeated panel removal, and recessed D-rings/cam locks for safe lifting and frequent inspection. For international shipments, confirm ISPM-15 compliance on wood components.


Interior Support and Cushioning

The interior restrains the object without turning the crate into a pressure box. A common approach uses 2–3 inches of closed-cell foam beyond the frame edges, sized to the object's weight and expected shock.

  • A mirror should float in a padded cell — its face should never touch wood, screws, or a hard lid pad.

  • Canvas needs slotted bracing that supports the frame, not the painted surface.

  • Heavy or oversized works often need a cradle or full-edge skid that sends load into the crate structure, not the artwork.


Loose cushioning (foam, sealed Tyvek, bubble) suits gentle handling but can migrate. Bonded pads and engineered tie-downs give more repeatable positioning. Place corner blocks where they restrain the frame — never against glazing.


Climate Control and Sealing

For short domestic moves, a vapor-permeable wrap is often enough. Longer or variable routes justify a sealed barrier (4–6 mil poly) with desiccant placed inside — but not touching the object.


Seal seams with silicone caulk, use EPDM/silicone weatherstripping at the lid, and check corners for gaps. Use stainless screws where corrosion or long storage is a factor (zinc-plated is fine for controlled domestic use). Skip drywall screws — they fail under vibration. Let caulk cure fully before packing; a sealed box traps moisture as effectively as it excludes it.


Labeling and Logistics

Apply large orientation arrows on multiple sides and the roof, mark the glass side clearly, and use ISO 780 pictograms plus plain-language notes. Include with the shipment:

  • Condition report with photos of vulnerable areas

  • Packing list of contents and hardware

  • Interior photo sheet taken before the lid closes

  • Transport record with weight/dimensions

  • Opening instructions for the receiving team


Mirrors should travel upright unless engineered otherwise — laying one flat pushes vibration through the glass instead of its protected edge. Confirm the carrier's equipment (liftgate, air-ride, dock access) before you build, not after.


Quick Pre-Build Checklist

Before cutting anything, confirm you have:

  • Full object dimensions, weight, and center of gravity

  • A clearance plan shown on the drawing, not left to guesswork

  • Material and hardware specs (plywood grade, foam, barrier film, fasteners)

  • An interior drawing with blocking and support labeled

  • A climate plan (barrier, desiccant, inspection method)

  • Exterior markings (orientation, glass side, ISPM-15 if needed)

  • A route review covering every handoff to the install site


When to Call a Professional

Bring in an experienced crating shop when the object is oversized for the planned vehicle, has an uncertain center of gravity, is unusually fragile, or needs documented chain of custody for a loan. Multi-stop tours also warrant it, since the crate has to survive repeated opening and closing. Existing damage, loose paint, or humidity sensitivity should change the whole support strategy — not just the padding.
