Fine Art Print Sizes and How to Frame Them

An 18 × 24-inch print can take up considerably more wall space once you add a mat and frame. Before ordering, measure the wall, then work backward from the finished frame size to the print that fits. That way, you can leave room around furniture, doorways, and nearby artwork.

Common Fine Art Print Sizes

Print size

Where it works well

5 × 7 or 8 × 10 in

Shelves, narrow hallways, and small gallery wall groupings

11 × 14 or 12 × 16 in

Bedrooms, entryways, and home offices, especially in pairs

16 × 20 or 18 × 24 in

A focal point above a console or part of a grouping over a sofa

24 × 30 or 24 × 36 in

Feature walls, spacious living rooms, and lobbies

30 × 40 in

Large walls with room to step back and take in the whole piece

If you’re ordering an international print, you may see A-series sizes. A4 is 210 × 297 mm, A3 is 297 × 420 mm, and A2 is 420 × 594 mm. Check the exact sheet dimensions before buying a frame, especially if the print has a white border.

Measure the Image, Paper, and Frame

Ask the printer or framer for three measurements before you buy.

  1. Image size is the width and height of the printed artwork. The mat opening determines how much of it you’ll see.

  2. Sheet size includes the entire paper, along with any white border, signature, or irregular edges.

  3. Outside frame size is the finished width and height you’ll measure on the wall.

An 8 × 10-inch image can pair with an 11 × 14-inch frame and a mat. An 11 × 14-inch image can pair with a 16 × 20-inch frame. These frame sizes describe what fits inside the frame. Ask for the outside dimensions, which vary with the width of the frame molding. If a signature sits below the image, ask for a mat opening that leaves it visible.

Check the Crop and Print Resolution

Match the proportions of your image to the print size if you want to preserve the full composition. An 8 × 10 and a 16 × 20 share the same proportions, as do a 12 × 16 and an 18 × 24. A 24 × 36 image scaled to fill a 24 × 30 opening would lose six inches along its long dimension. If you want to keep the whole image, choose a frame with matching proportions or leave room for borders.

For detailed work viewed up close, 300 pixels per inch (ppi) is a useful printing benchmark. Multiply each print dimension in inches by 300 to estimate the file size you need. An 8 × 10 print calls for 2,400 × 3,000 pixels at that resolution, and a 16 × 20 calls for 4,800 × 6,000. For a large piece viewed across a room, a lower resolution may work. Ask your printer for a full-scale test strip so you can check the detail before committing.

Choose Framing Materials and Test the Layout

For works on paper, use acid-free mat and backing boards and keep the print separated from the glass or acrylic. Acrylic can reduce the weight of an oversized frame. Custom framing can help when a sheet has irregular edges, needs extra room for a signature, or falls between ready-made sizes.

On an open residential wall, start with the center of the artwork about 57 to 60 inches above the floor. Above a sofa or console, adjust the height to give the furniture enough clearance. In a narrow hallway, smaller pieces are often easier to take in at close range.

Before drilling, use painter’s tape to mark the outside edges of the finished frame. For a gallery wall, tape every frame and check the gaps as a group. Look at the layout from where people will sit or walk, and check for reflections from windows and lights.
